MPS School Counseling Standards

Standards are identified as focal points by grade from the American School Counselor Association Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success Standards (2014) . Schools may tailor their focus standards to their own building needs. 

Kindergarten

Academic

  • Demonstrate an ability to handle transitions
  • Build positive attitude toward work and learning
  • Cultivate self-confidence in ability to succeed in school 

Career

  • Demonstrate ability to assume responsibility
  • Gain awareness about possible careers

Social/Emotional

  • Demonstrate personal safety skills
  • Build a sense of belonging in the school environment
  • Create relationships positive relationships with other students

 

1st Grade 

Academic

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently
  • Create positive relationships with adults that support success
  • Build positive attitude toward work and learning

Career

  • Use effective cooperation skills  
  • Gain awareness about possible careers

Social/Emotional

  • Demonstrate personal safety skills
  • Learn bully prevention keys
  • Identify similarities and differences among a diverse group of peers     

2nd Grade 

Academic

  • Actively engage in challenging work 
  • Cultivate self-confidence in ability to succeed in school
  • Work well with peers in academic groups  

Career

  • Use effective communication skills 
  • Gain awareness about possible careers

Social/Emotional

  • Build a positive self-concept

3rd Grade
